Silver Hawks Sweep Hot Rods

After beginning the season 1-10, the South Bend Silver Hawks have won four straight games, including a three-game sweep of the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Keon Broxton scored four runs, including a solo home run, helping the South Bend Silver Hawks to an 8-6 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday night and a three game series sweep.

Broxton was moved into the leadoff spot a few games into the season, and has started to respond to the extra at-bats with his current five-game hitting streak. The speedy outfielder singled and scored in the first, homered in the second, walked and scored in the fourth, and finally tripled and scored in the eighth to pace the Silver Hawks' largest run output of the season.

Of course, with the exception of the home run, Broxton couldn't drive himself in and he had plenty of help from his teammates. Chris Owings went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in the two spot of the lineup. Bobby Borchering had an RBI and a run scored in the three hole, while David Nick drove in a run from the cleanup spot.

Matt Davidson also had three hits on the night, extending his hitting streak to a team-high seven games.

Even with all that scoring, the biggest at-bat of the night may have belonged to Ryan Babineau. In a 3-3 tie with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third, Babineau lined a 3-and-2 pitch from Kyle Lobstein (LP, 0-2) to center field for a two run single. That hit snapped the team's 0-for-12 mark with the bases loaded to start the season.

Dan Taylor (ND) started for South Bend, and battled his way through 4.2 innings of five run ball. Diogenes Rosario (WP, 1-0) enjoyed his best night of the season in relief, tossing the next 2.1 innings in scoreless fashion for the win. Keny Sosa (ND) pitched the eighth and Bradin Hagens (SV, 1) got the save in the ninth despite allowing a late run.

Ryan Wiegand went 3-for-5 for Bowling Green with a two-run homer and three RBI. Mark Thomas and Tyler Bortnick each added two hits and a RBI as well for the Hot Rods who have lost seven straight games.

South Bend has won four straight games and five of their last six games. The lone loss in that stretch was an extra-inning defeat at the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon.
