BayBears Fall in 11 to Diamond Jaxx

In their first extra inning affair of the season, the Mobile BayBears fell short to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in a 5-4 defeat.

West Tenn (8-7) broke a 4-4 knot in the 11th inning as Mark Kiger knocked a two-out, two-strike single off Vince Bongiovanni (0-1), which allowed Luis Oliveros to score the winning run. Oliveros wasn't even scheduled to start as he replaced Adam Moore in the Jaxx lineup just before first pitch.

BayBears (8-7) starter Adam Howard gave up a pair of runs in the first as Kiger drove home Mike Saunders with a single. Kiger came in on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. The BayBears had an answer for one of those runs in the bottom of the first as Bryan Byrne smashed a single to bring home Guillermo Reyes.

In the fifth, a double by Marshall Hubbard knocked Saunders home to make it 3-1 Jaxx. Shawn Garrett grounded out to bring home Kiger, giving West Tenn a three-run lead. As has been the mantra the last couple nights, the BayBears wouldn't lie down as Brandon Burgess and Cyle Hankerd ripped back-to-back run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fifth to pull the BayBears within one. A throwing error by reliever Roman Martinez pushed Reyes to the plate which tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

After a 3-2 homestand, the BayBears hit the road to take on the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field tomorrow night at 6:15 p.m. central time. They'll return home to host the Mississippi Braves at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 at Hank Aaron Stadium. Call for tickets at (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.

BEAR CLAWS

· The BayBears fell to 3- 3 in one-run games, and they are now 2-4 when they out-hit their opponents. Oddly, the BayBears are 5-1 when they get out-hit.

· Abe Woody worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He hasn't allowed a run in 10 innings so far this season.

· Greg Thomson had the night off for the first time this season. He had been the only BayBear to appear in every game.

***This Day in BayBears History: April 18, 1998, Ben Davis picked up an RBI double and Gary Matthews, Jr. scored twice as the BayBears beat the Huntsville Stars 8-1. The game also featured future big league third baseman Eric Chavez.
