Rocha Suspended; Stats; Gonzo DBL #500

The Diamondbacks have a young hurler who will be sitting for 100 games this year, that's more than 2/3 of the minor league season, as Bud Selig's steroid policy hits the D'Backs at home; ALSO: Medical Reports; Complete Player Stats through the past week; Gonzo joins Bonds...in a good way finally getting #500.

Angel Rocha, a minor league left-hander for the Diamondbacks, drew the harshest penalty to date in baseball's strict new drug-testing policy, getting suspended for 100 games for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
It was the second offense for Rocha, 21, a hard-throwing strikeout artist from the Dominican Republic.
Under the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, a first positive test grew from a 15-game to a 50-game suspension. A second positive test rose from 30 games to 100. Four other minor-leaguers were suspended for 50 games on Tuesday.
"We of course support the policy in place, and this is a reminder that we need to continue to educate our players," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said.
Rocha split last season between Class A South Bend (Ind.) and Class A Yakima (Wash.) where he was a combined 5-9 with 136 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings.
REPLAY: Left fielder Luis Gonzalez hit his 500th career double in the sixth inning off Matt Morris in Arizona's 7-4 victory over the Giants, becoming just the 21st player in history to hit 300 home runs and 500 doubles. The only other active player on the list, which includes 14 Hall of Famers, is the Giants' Bonds.
Gonzalez's double helped spark a seven-hit, five-run inning for Arizona, which has been searching for its offense to get untracked. The defense did the job, too, as the Diamondbacks tied a club record by turning four double plays, a feat they have done nine times in franchise history.

NOTES, QUOTES
--RHP Russ Ortiz left Tuesday's start in the third inning with a right calf cramp. He is listed as day-to-day, but most likely he will make his next scheduled start. Ortiz allowed three walks and one hit in 2 1/3 innings, but he didn't give up a run.
--3B Chad Tracy, batting .320 after his first 12 games, looks close to being in midseason form after an up-and-down first week of the schedule.
"Consistency is what he's all about," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's a guy we think has a chance to win a batting title someday, and consistency is what wins you batting titles. He can grind (on himself). Not outwardly, but inwardly. He can beat himself up a bit."
--The Diamondbacks pitching staff was the first group in the majors to eclipse the 100-strikeout mark in 2006, as Arizona hurlers recorded 111 strikeouts after 13 games. The next closest in the National League was the Mets (98), while Seattle (97) had the most in the American League.
--Manager Bob Melvin on the end of RF Shawn Green's 200-game errorless streak on Monday: "You never want to say anybody's due. Certain guys play a little differently. Some guys are conservative. Some guys take more chances. But that's quite a string for anybody, however they play."
--SS Craig Counsell has hit safely in nine of 11 starts and has reached base to lead off the first inning seven times. His six hits to lead off a game are tied with Detroit's Curtis Granderson for the most in the majors.
BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- Number of games out of the Diamondbacks' first 10 that were decided by two runs or less. They were 2-5 in those games.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Things will even out and I think, 1-8, we'll be tough at-bats this year. We're just not showing it right now." -- Manager Bob Melvin on the club's .231 batting average after its first nine games of the season.

ROSTER REPORT
MEDICAL WATCH:
SS Craig Counsell is playing with a "SLAP" tear to the labrum in his right shoulder, which forced him to miss about three weeks of camp. So far, it hasn't affected his hitting, but time will tell how much it affects his throwing in the field.
UT Damion Easley has been bothered by tendinitis in his right elbow, but it isn't thought to be a long-term problem.
RHP Brandon Medders suffered all spring with a muscle group strain below his right shoulder. He started the season on the 15-day disabled list, and he is on an injury-rehab assignment.
LHP Terry Mulholland went on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left elbow. It appears he won't need surgery.
RHP Russ Ortiz left his Tuesday start with a right calf cramp. He hopes he won't have to miss a turn in the rotation.
