Sky Sox Halt Aces Streak at Five

The Reno Aces were off to the best start in franchise history after winning five of their first six games, but got derailed by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Thursday, losing 18-13.

An early seven-run Aces lead and the chance for a series sweep was spoiled by an eight-run fourth inning for Colorado Springs on Thursday, as the Sky Sox rallied past Reno, 18-13, at Security Service Field.

Reno jumped ahead early with a three-run first and plated five in the fourth to take 7-2 lead over the Sky Sox. But the Colorado Springs offense, which had scored just six runs in the previous three games of the series, posted eight runs on seven hits in the home half of the fourth to climb out of its deficit and take a one-run lead. Reno re-took the lead after scoring twice in the sixth, but the Sky Sox would push across eight more runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to avoid the series sweep.

Aces starter Kevin Mulvey surrendered 10 runs—nine earned—on 12 hits over five innings of work. Mulvey struck out two and didn't walk a batter in a 77-pitch effort. The Aces are now 0-2 when Mulvey starts and 5-0 otherwise.  Ron Mahay (0-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs—three earned—over 2.0 innings of work, and Daniel Stange allowed four runs in one inning of work.

Andy Tracy, Cody Ransom, and Wily Mo Pena homered for an Aces club that recorded 16 hits on the day. Three Aces—Collin Cowgill, Ransom, and Pena—finished with three hits, and David Winfree drove in three runs. Tony Abreu hit a pinch-hit double in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Three Aces

  • Pena's four homers tie him for 1st in the PCL while his .955 SLG ranks 2nd
  • Cowgill had been 2-for-17 this season before his big 3-hit game
  • Reno's 1-5 hitters combined for 13 hits, 3 HR, and 12 runs scored
