RATED AS THE A'S NUMBER THREE PROSPECT BY SCOUT.COM
Gonzalez was one of six players acquired in the Dan Haren trade from Arizona. The five-tool outfielder has been one of baseball's top prospects since he posted an 860 OPS as a 19-year-old with Low-A South Bend of the Midwest League in 2005. He was Scout.com's top-rated Arizona Diamondback's prospect before he was traded to Oakland.
In 2007, Gonzalez spent most of the season with Double-A Mobile, where he hit .286 with 16 homers and an 806 OPS in 120 games. He had a 10-game stint with Triple-A Tucson at the end of the year, during which he hit .310 with an 896 OPS. For his career, Gonzalez has a .286 average and an 817 OPS in five seasons.
Gonzalez is one of the best pure athletes in the A's system. He has a plus-throwing arm to go along with good power to all fields and above-average foot speed. He hasn't been much of a base-stealer in his career, but he has the speed to play center if needed. His arm profiles well in right-field. Gonzalez's greatest weakness as a player right now is his plate discpline. He has walked only 162 times against 455 strike-outs during his career. He is the A's top outfield prospect.
