Tom Layne (12-6) worked game one of a doubleheader for the seventh time this season and waded through six innings while scattering eight hits. His only trouble came in the bottom of the sixth when he surrendered a two-out double to Trayvon Robinson before a two-run homer by Jerry Sands.
By then, the BayBears (69-55, 33-23) had polished up a 4-0 lead for Layne. They picked up run in the third against Chattanooga (59-67, 26-31) starter Alberto Bastardo (6-4) with Layne tripling to right-center before a single by Evan Frey pushed him home.
In the sixth, the BayBears broke through for three runs against Cole St. Clair with Konrad Schmidt smacking at three-base hit to score Collin Cowgill and Bryan Byrne before Ryan Wheeler's single brought Schmidt to the dish. Daniel Stange (S, 9) secured the win with a perfect bottom of the seventh.
Chris Rahl helped lift the BayBears in the nightcap as he banged a triple off the wall in center field in the second before coming home on
a knock by Sean Coughlin against David Pfeiffer (6-4). Byrne singled Ollie Linton to the plate in the third before Rahl cracked a two-run single to put the BayBears up by four.
Bryan Henry started and tossed three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Jeff Dietz (3-3) relieved Henry with a pair of zeroes and just one hit given up before Reid Mahon recorded the final six outs. Chattanooga's only tally came off Mahon in the seventh, when Jaime Pedroza grounded into a fielder's choice to score Corey Smith.
