Tom Layne Wins his 10th Game

Tom Layne was able to get to the 10-win mark in his third attempt, somewhat surprisingy in a start in which he walked five batters in five innings. The victory also put the Mobile BayBears in first place.

With five scoreless innings and five strikeouts, left-hander Tom Layne qualified for his 10th victory of the season, and the BayBears held it for him in a 6-2 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday night at AT&T Field.

Layne (10-4) was supported with a bunch of early runs from the BayBears (53-44, 17-12). Kory Casto walked with two outs in the top of the first and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches from Chris Withrow (3-6). Casto was knocked to the plate on a single by Konrad Schmidt.

In the second, the BayBears padded their lead as Taylor Harbin walked and stole second before a single to right by Sean Coughlin drove him home. Coughlin's RBI sac fly in the fourth brought Bryan Byrne to the dish, giving the BayBears a 3-0 cushion.

Chattanooga (46-52, 13-16) fell into a 4-0 hole when Withrow uncorked a solo home run to Collin Cowgill in the fifth inning. Cowgill cracked his 11th dinger off the pitch speed board in left-center field.

Layne had some issues with the bases on balls.  He walked five, including three men to load the bases in the fourth, but he wiggled out of trouble each time. He was relieved by Roque Mercedes in the sixth, and Mercedes tossed two scoreless frames to push the game to Reid Mahon in the eighth.

Mahon allowed three hits and two runs in the eighth to help draw Chattanooga closer. The BayBears' defense didn't fare well as they made two errors including a bobble by Harbin which allowed Corey Smith and Andrew Lambo to come home. Mahon settled down from there and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.

Evan Frey's RBI single in the ninth and a sac fly from Casto pushed the BayBears back up by four against reliever Bobby Blevins. Daniel Stange closed the contest with a perfect bottom of the ninth to propel the BayBears into sole possession of first place in the South Division.
