Silver Hawks Swept in Opening Series

South Bend, IN – The Great Lakes Loons completed a three game sweep of the opening series with a 7-1 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium on Saturday. The Loons outscored the Silver Hawks 32-7 over the course of the three days to start the season.

For the second time in three games, the Silver Hawks took an early lead when Chris Owings singled in the bottom of the first off of Loons starter Allen Webster and eventually scored on a wild pitch. That would be the only run the Silver Hawks would get on the night, as Webster and Matt Magill held South Bend to just three hits after the first inning.

The Loons tied the game in the top of the third on a RBI groundout by Christian Lara. The run was charged as unearned to Silver Hawks starter Eric Smith as an earlier error allowed the inning to continue. The Silver Hawks have now committed six errors in the first three games.

The Loons took the lead when Jerry Sands took Smith deep to right in the fourth inning for a two run homer.

Great Lakes added four more runs in the top of the seventh against Yonata Ortega (ND) to round out the scoring. Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Angelo Songco each drove in a run in the seventh, with both picking up their fifth RBI of the season.

David Nick went two-for-two with two singles and two walks for the Silver Hawks at the plate, while Alberto Diaz extended his season-opening hitting streak to three.
