Bryan Augenstein allowed four earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of
work. Cesar Valdez relieved his fellow D-backs prospect and stranded an
inherited runner at first base. Valdez would not record another out in the
game, however, as six straight batters reached against him, five of which would
eventually score.
Neither pitcher throws particularly hard, so Valdez did not provide a change
of pace from what Peoria hitters saw from Augenstein. Moreover, Valdez was
relying upon his fastball far more often than usual despite the fact that his
changeup and curveball are both superior pitches. That lack of variety in
pitch selection proved costly.
Three D-backs prospects did appear in the Scottsdale starting lineup and
contribute. Cole Gillespie reached base twice and Brandon Allen coaxed
three walks. Second baseman Pedro Ciriaco really had a good day. As
the Scorpions' leadoff hitter, Ciriaco walked, singled twice, and doubled.
He scored two runs and drove in two others, accounting for four of Scottsdale's
five runs.
