Ryan Wheeler, selected from Loyola Marymount University in the fifth round this June, will leave a last place team and is thrust into the middle of a playoff chase. Wheeler
hit .363 with five home runs and 36 RBI in 64 games for the Yakima Bears. At
the time of his promotion, the big first baseman led the Northwest League in hits, on-base percentage, and extra base hits, while also ranking second in batting average. On Thursday, Wheeler was selected as a Northwest League All-Star.
Nelson Gomez was a 28th round pick in 2008, and enjoyed success with Missoula last season, leading the club in both home runs and RBI. His numbers dipped this season with the Silver Hawks, as he
batted just .218/.277/.317 with two home runs and 31 RBI in 95 games for South Bend. However, his experience should help Visalia as they close out their regular season and try for a playoff spot in the California League.
Gomez came up as a first baseman and experimented at catcher and in the outfield
during instructs last year, but primarily manned first base for South Bend.
