Brent Greer Named Player of the Week

Yakima Bears' shortstop Brent Greer was named Northwest League Hitter of the Week on Monday after a three-homer performance on Sunday. The 14th-round draft selection from last month batted .545 for the week.

Over the past week, Western Carolina University product Brent Greer batted .545 (12-for-22) with ten runs scored, three doubles, four home runs, and six RBI. In the first two games of the series in Everett (July 4-5), Greer went 6-for-10 with six runs scored, four home runs and six RBI. Anthony Smith and Collin Cowgill (twice) each earned the Northwest League Hitter of the Week honors for Yakima in 2008.

On July 5, Yakima's Brent Greer blasted three home runs in just his 14th professional baseball game. Greer, the Diamondbacks' 14th-round selection in this year's draft, finished the game 4-for-5 with a double and a walk to go with his three bombs. He scored five runs and collected five RBI.

"My swing felt good. I felt like I had a lot of energy during the game," Greer mentioned after his three-homer performance.  "I kept putting myself in good counts to get fastballs that I could drive. I got good pitches to hit and I took full advantage of it."

At the time of Greer's award, his four home runs were tied for second in the league while his .698 slugging percentage was second-best to Tri-City first baseman Mike Zuanich's .811 mark. Greer was pacing the league with 10 extra-base hits, and his .358 average was among the best in the circuit.  He hadn't homered in his first dozen professional games before cranking out four over the holiday weekend.

Greer also batted .420 with a career-high eight homers for WCU this year.  He attributes his recent power surge to a leg kick that he added to his swing in his sophomore year.  Time will tell whether advanced pitchers will be able to exploit that leg-kick, but for now, Greer is on top of the world and getting a kick out of it.
