Schlereth, a first-round pick of the D-backs in 2008, has a team-low 1.14 ERA in 18 appearances for the BayBears this season with 31 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. He also spent a couple weeks with the Arizona Diamondbacks where he fanned seven hitters in 4.2 frames, but got hit hard in one appearance against the Padres in Petco Park that ballooned his big league ERA to 9.64.
To replace Schlereth on the roster, infielder Eli Rumler has been promoted from Hi-A Visalia, where he was hitting .208 with a home run and 11 knocked in. Rumler netted a .226 average in 113 games for South Bend last season, but was named as the best defensoive player on the club despite some miscues in the postseason.
