South Bend right-hander Ryan Cook started the game for the East All Stars, tabbed by Haley based on his early success this season in winning five of his first six starts. Cook allowed a single in the bottom of the first to Kane County’s Jason Christian but stranded the runner at third in his only inning of work.
Haley’s East squad scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. With Cedar Rapids’ Tyler Chatwood pitching, West Michigan’s Ronnie Bourquin drew a leadoff walk. Great Lakes’ Dee Gordon bounced into a fielder’s choice, erasing Bourquin at second. Gordon stole second and scored on a double from Loons teammate Jaime Pedroza for the 1-0 lead.
After extending the lead to 2-0 on a RBI single by Great Lakes’ Tony Delmonico, Bourquin stole the show with a three-run home run to left off of Kane County’s Jamie Richmond, putting the East up 5-0 in the fourth inning.
Kane County’s Steve Kleen homered as part of a two run inning for the West in the fourth, bringing them within three at 5-2.
With a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the sixth, South Bend’s T.J. Hose was brought in out of the bullpen. Hose threw just two pitches, retiring both batters he faced to end the inning.
West Michigan’s Brandon Douglas and Fort Wayne’s James Darnell had back-to-back doubles in the seventh, extending the lead back to four for the East at 6-2.
South Bend’s Bayron Zepeda inherited a first and second, one-out situation in the seventh. Zepeda allowed one run to score, but the East held the lead after seven innings 6-3. A plethora of relievers finished off the win for the East.
South Bend infielder Reynaldo Navarro was 0-for-2 with South Bend outfielder Alfredo Marte going 0-for-1.
Fort Wayne’s Sawyer Carroll was awarded the Star of Stars Award after going 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
