Entering his May 26th start with four consecutive losses, Matt Torra
had made some folks around Mobile begin to wonder whether he would regain the
stuff that made him the 8th-best pitching prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks
organization this offseason according to FutureBacks.com.
With the BayBears in the midst of what has turned into a franchise-record nine-game winning streak, Torra had his best outing of the season last Tuesday against Jacksonville as he limited the Suns to five hits and no earned runs over seven innings.
Looking to capitalize off that terrific outing, Torra hit the mound on Sunday in Chattanooga with an even better start than the one against Jacksonville. Using only 85 pitches (61 strikes), Torra tossed a three-hit complete game shutout in the BayBears’ 5-0 trouncing of the Lookouts.
Torra was in command all night against the Lookouts as he never allowed a man to reach third while rattling off six 1-2-3 innings. He now leads the Southern League in innings pitched (64.2) and complete games (2). He’s also the fourth BayBear this season to win a weekly honor, joining Bryan Augenstein, Ricardo Sosa, and Cyle Hankerd. For the week, Torra was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 16 innings. He walked one, fanned six, and scattered only eight hits.
