The suspension of Augie Murillo is effective immediately. Clenbuterol is used to
aid with the burning of stored body fat, reduce muscle protein degradation, and can also be used to treat asthma,
although it's use for such is banned by the FDA.
"We are disappointed in our player after learning of the results of the test," said Peter Woodfork, the D-backs' assistant general manager, who is filling in overseeing the player-development department following the promotion of A.J. Hinch. "We thoroughly support the Major League Baseball drug-testing policy and the penalties associated with that process. This organization does not condone the use of stimulants and will use this violation as a strong educational message for all of our players."
The 27-year old third baseman was hitting .317 with 11 doubles and a homer in 101 at-bats this year for
the Reno Aces.
The D-backs signed Murillo as a non-drafted free agent in 2002. Last season, he was loaned to Monterrey in the Mexican League, where he hit .322 with 10 homers and 57 RBI.
Murillo was an MVP candidate this winter in the Mexican Winter League, as he
batted .345 with 11 homers and 47 RBI for Obregon.
