Converted reliever Sean Morgan gave the South Bend Silver Hawks their third strong start of the series and Victor Estevez delivered a grand slam to defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernals 10-8 and complete a three-game sweep.

South Bend, IN – In front of the largest crowd of the season thus far, the South Bend Silver Hawks completed the three game sweep with a 10-8 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on a special school day at Coveleski Stadium.

The Silver Hawks gave the students plenty to cheer about early, racing out to a 10-1 lead after five innings before finally holding on for the 10-8 victory. Victor Estevez provided the biggest blast of the game for South Bend, a grand slam as part of a six-run third inning.

South Bend scored a run in the first as Brendan Duffy singled to start the inning and then stole second. One out later, Duffy went to third on a single by Alberto Diaz, and scored when the right-fielder bobbled the ball for an unearned run.

The Silver Hawks scored six more runs in the third, chasing Kernels starter Will Smith (LP, 0-1) from the game. Diaz had a sacrifice fly to start the scoring, and Jake Elmore picked up a bases loaded walk for a 3-0 lead. Estevez was the next batter and he lined a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, his first home run of the season and the Hawks third grand slam since April 28th.

Reynaldo Navarro added a two-run double in the fifth and scored on a single from Alfredo Marte for the 10-1 lead at the time.

The Kernels wouldn’t go quietly however, as they scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning to make it a game again. South Bend starter Sean Morgan (WP, 1-0) was charged with three runs, but only one earned in 5.1 innings, while reliever Jordan Meaker (ND) allowed four runs, and only one earned in his 1.2 innings of work.

Adam Younger and Ryan Groth each had two RBI for Cedar Rapids, who entered the ninth trailing 10-7. A solo home run by Roberto Lopez made it 10-8, but Taylor Sinclair (SV, 1) got the final outs needed to preserve the victory for the Silver Hawks.
