Desmond Jennings punched out a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first against Barry Enright, giving the Biscuits (5-8) a 1-0 lead. Heath Rollins (1-1), however, couldn’t hold that advantage as the BayBears blitzed him for three in the third and three more in the fourth.
Evan Frey’s run-scoring single in the third put the BayBears on top as Orlando Mercado scored. Frey came home on a base hit by Mark Hallberg. In the fourth, Yunesky Sanchez tripled into the right field corner to bring home Ricardo Sosa and Bryan Byrne. Sanchez strolled to the plate on a passed ball to make it 6-1.
After a Rhyne Hughes longball in the bottom of the fourth drew Montgomery closer, the BayBears’
bullpen held off the Biscuits for the rest of the night. Vince Bongiovanni (2-0) replaced Enright in the fifth and worked 2.1 hitless innings
before Jason Urquidez tossed two more scoreless frames to end the contest.
The BayBears pulled away in the eighth, when Mercado tripled home a pair before scoring on a sac fly by Pedro Ciriaco. In the ninth, Chris Rahl produced an RBI single, with Mercado finishing the scoring on a two-run single.
On the evening, Orlando Mercado went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, falling
a home run short of the cycle. He also threw out Rashad Eldridge trying to
steal second base.
