PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks selected catcher James Skelton from the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball's Rule 5 Draft today, as announced by D-backs' Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes.
Skelton, 23, began this past season with Lakeland (A), playing in 63 games, batting .307 (65-for-212) with 43 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, three home runs and 23 RBI, before being promoted to Erie (AA) on July 31. He saw action in 24 games for the SeaWolves, batting .294 (25-for-85) with 22 runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI.
Last year, Skelton was named the 10th-best prospect in the Tigers' organization by
our sister site, TigsTown.com.
In five minor league seasons, Skelton holds a .292 batting average (253-for-867) with 155 runs scored, 45 doubles, five triples, 13 home runs and 114 RBI in 276 games in the Tigers' organization. Skelton was selected as a Florida State League West Division All-Star this past season after being selected to the Midwest League's midseason and postseason All-Star squads in 2007 for West Michigan (A).
