Silver Hawks Advance in Playoffs

The Sout Bend Silver Hawks bested the West Michigan Whitecaps two games to one in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs. Up next are the Dayton Dragons, whom the Hawks have dominated this year.

The South Bend Silver Hawks were actually outscored 13-8 in the series, because the Whitecaps clobbered them in a rain-postponed Game Two by the score of 11-0. The Hawks won Game One by a 5-3 margin and the rubber game 2-1.

The offensive stars of both games hailed from the University of Kentucky. Catcher Sean Coughlin and outfielder Collin Cowgill combined to go 7-for-9 with two runs scored and two RBI in Game One, with the catcher responsible for four of the hits and both RBI. In Game Three, Cowgill homered, singed, and even added an outfield assist to the series-clinching cause.

The Hawks also received outstanding starts from youngsters Jarrod Parker and Patrick McAnaney in their two wins. Parker overcame a five-error performance from the defense in Game One to make a quality start. McAnaney simply dominated the Whitecaps in the rubber match, surrendering just one hit and no walks in five innings of work.

In both wins, Daniel Schlereth and Clay Zavada pitched brilliantly out of the pen. This year's first-rounder threw three perfect innings total that included four strikeouts. He was credited with a hold in both contests. Zavada had identical ninth innings in the games: one hit allowed, one batter strikeout, and one earned save. Bryan Shaw actually blew the save in the sixth Saturday, but also recorded for strikeouts and received credit for the victory.

The Hawks will play in Dayton Monday to begin the next round of the postseason. The Dragons upset the Lansing Lugnuts two-games-to-none and will be playing on two games of rest, however they went just 2-9 ahainst the Silver Hawks this season. Recommended Stories
