South Bend, IN - The Burlington Bees and South Bend Silver Hawks played a 12-inning game Sunday afternoon, with the Silver Hawks winning 3-2. A wild pitch in the 12th inning allowed the winning run to score for South Bend.
The Bees scored the first run of the ballgame in the first inning. David Lough led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a Johnny Giavotella single. A wild pitch then allowed both runners to move up a base. With one out, Jason Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to score Lough and give the Bees a 1-0 lead.
South Bend tied the ballgame by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
First baseman Chance Wheeless doubled to lead things off, and Elijah Rumler did
what he does best by
grounding out to the right side and advancing Wheeless to third before Ramon Ramirez got Wheeless home on a sacrifice fly.
The Bees were able to answer in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Mike Moustakas hit his 14th homerun of the season to give the Bees a 2-1 lead. South Bend answered that run in the bottom of the inning
with consecutive two-out singles by Collin Cowgill, Taylor Harbin, and Sean Coughlin to once again tie the game.
The score remained tied all the way until the 12th inning. With Tim Huber on the mound for the Bees, there was one out and runners on at second and third. Huber threw a wild pitch, which allowed
team leader Matt Oxendine to score from third to win the ballgame for South Bend.
Oxendine was pinch-running for Ramirez, who led off the inning with a single.
Jimmy Principe walked and Jo Jo Batten laid down a clutch sacrifice bunt to put
Oxendine in position to make his winning dash to the plate.
Chrisitan Beltre allowed 10 hits in his 6.2 innings of work, but managed to
pitch out of jams and keep the Silver Hawks in the ballgame. The bullpen
continued its masterful work, with Clay Zavada, Daniel Stange, and William Spottiswood combining to allow just one base runner in 5.1 innings. It was
Spottiswood's second win in four days.
The Bees and South Bend conclude the series Monday evening. First pitch of the
rubber match is scheduled for 7:00. Matt Mitchell (6-8, 3.93) is scheduled to
face Josh Collmenter (11-5, 2.99). The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
