Jarrod Parker represents the highest of seven players drafted in 2007 that
will play in the 2008 Midwest League All-Star game. Parker has been
everything you would expect out of a #9 overall pick and more than you would
hope for from a 19-year old playing in the Midwest League. He won four
consecutive starts earlier in the year, has only walked as many as three batters
once in nine games, and boasts a sub-3.00 ERA. He truly makes this team by
being a star, but he also has the numbers to back up the selection.
Evan Frey hit safely in 32 of his first 34 games, including a 23-game streak.
He is currently third in the league in batting with a .330 mark. His 13
stolen bases match his total from Yakima last year and rank second in the entire
organization to Pedro Ciriaco, who has swiped 17. In addition to Frey's
obvious offensive talent, the diminutive sparkplug also makes several
highlight-reel style catches per week, making him a great addition to this
All-Star club.
Sean Coughlin did not even join the Silver Hawks until May due to lingering
soreness after off-season knee surgery. But
what a debut he had. After his first 15 games, Coughlin led his team in
homers (6) despite having about one-third of the at bats that most of his
teammates did. He was also batting .422 with seven doubles and 19
RBI through those 15 games. Coughlin cooled considerably in the ensuing
weeks, but the catcher can feel proud to have made this All-Star team despite
not playing at all in the month of April.
Bryan Augenstein currently ranks fourth in the MWL in ERA, third in innings, and fourth in WHIP.
He owns a relatively low win total of three, but it
is important to note that he has also only suffered one loss. The Diamondbacks selected Augenstein in the 7th round of last year's draft.
Evan Scribner has been fantastic out of the bullpen since joining South Bend late last season. He is the only one of these six players who played with the Hawks prior to 2008. He has fanned 42 batters in just over 27 innings, and hasn't allowed a run to score since April.
First baseman Michael Mee will join the team as a reserve player. Mee batted a robust .322 in April, but followed that up with just a .223 mark in May.
William Spottiswoodand Thomas Layne both
merited serious consideration for All-Star selection as well, but just missed the cut.
