Catcher Chris Snyder, second baseman Orlando Hudson, plus relief pitchers Juan Cruz, Edgar Gonzalez, Brandon Lyon and Jose Valverde all received arbitration offers from the Arizona Diamondbacks before Wednesday’s deadline.
Had the team failed to extend offers to any of these six players, they would have become free agents.
"All guys were major contributors to our club last year, so it wasn't a difficult decision to offer arbitration," general manager Josh Byrnes said.
Byrnes hopes to settle on a contract with all six players without going to a hearing. Most general managers today believe that arbitration hearings create bad blood between an organization and its players, as the team is forced to point out a player’s flaws publicly in order to keep his salary down.
"I think a hearing is a failure in negotiations," continued Byrnes. "It's a last resort. We spend a lot of time and put forth a lot of effort to try and avoid that."
The 2007 salaries for all six players are listed below:
Orlando Hudson – $3.9 million
Jose Valverde – $2 million
Juan Cruz – $1.5 million
Brandon Lyon - $1.4375 million
Chris Snyder – $400,000
Edgar Gonzalez - $387,500
Each player can expect a significant increase in those salaries based on their 2007 performances.
