Diamondbacks Finalize 40-Man Roster

In preparation for December 6th's Rule 5 Draft, the Arizona Diamondbacks have finalized their 40-man roster. These 40 players are protected from selection in the draft.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the final three players added to the club's 40-man roster before December 6th's Rule 5 Draft. The team selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Esmerling Vasquez, first baseman Javier Brito, and catcher Wilkin Castillo.

Vasquez, 24, went 10-6 with a 2.99 ERA (55 earned runs in 165 1/3 innings pitched) over 29 starts for Double-A Mobile. He earned the organization's Pitcher of the Year Award, leading the organization in innings pitched, starts (29) and strikeouts (151). He won eight straight decisions from May 18-Aug. 21 over a span of 19 starts.  Vasquez recently tore his labrum fielding a pop bunt in the AFL, and faces lengthy rehab time even if he can avoid surgery.

Brito, 24, hit .327 (144-for-440) with 29 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 72 RBIs in 127 games with Mobile. His average of .327 led the organization and was tops in the Southern League. He was named to the regular-season and end-of-season Southern League All-Star teams. and was named by FutureBacks.com as Position Player of the Year for the Mobile Baybears.

Castillo, 23, hit .302 (124-for-410) with 31 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 46 RBIs in 109 games with Mobile. His .302 average ranked ninth in the Southern League, while his 31 doubles tied for fourth. He made starts at four different positions, spending 70 games at catcher, 19 at second base, 10 at shortstop, and six at third base. As a catcher, he threw out 33 of 73 base stealers (.452) leading all catchers in the Southern League with at least 50 stolen-base attempts.

Additionally, the D-backs reinstated left-handed pitcher Randy Johnson from the 60-day disabled list. Right-handed pitchers Livan Hernandez and Bob Wickman and infielders Jeff Cirillo and Tony Clark elected free agency.

The D-backs' 40-man roster is comprised as follows: 20 pitchers, four catchers, nine infielders and seven outfielders.
