Schultz Promoted; Drew On the Way?

News and notes from the D'Backs including; Improved defense should pay off; At 13-13 they're still in the race, BoMel talks about the home field disadvantage; promotions could be coming for the biggest of big names; Gil bumped back to Double-A, but still a strong candidate.

Defense wins championships, they say, and the Diamondbacks might just have to figure out the pitching part of it to stay in the race for a National League West Division title. Questions about the starting rotation aside, it would appear the defense will be just fine.
Arizona has been making dozens of great plays with the leather recently in winning five of its past seven games, and even when there's been a miscue -- see Shawn Green's dropped fly on a ball hit by the Dodgers' Kenny Lofton on Monday at Chase Field -- the defense has found a way to make things right. Green, who has committed only two errors in his past 211 games, later robbed J.D. Drew of a two-run home run by leaping high over the right field fence to make up for the snafu.
As for the infield, it's been terrific. Third baseman Chad Tracy has yet to commit an error. Ditto with second baseman Orlando Hudson, the reigning Gold Glove winner at second from the American League when he played with the Blue Jays. Shortstop Craig Counsell, meanwhile, has been charged with just one error despite playing with a small labrum tear in his right shoulder and having been kept out of recent games with a pulled right hamstring. Overall, the Diamondbacks had the best defensive team in the National League and were gaining in confidence across the board with their gloves.
"When you have a good defense, you have the luxury of pitching aggressively," pitcher Miguel Batista said. "It's bad when you have a team that doesn't catch the ball, then you have to pitch defensively, and that's the worst thing you can do as a pitcher -- avoid contact."
Catcher Johnny Estrada, meanwhile, continues to offer more defensive positives than even the Diamondbacks could have imagined when they acquired him in a trade with the Braves. He helped turn a pivotal double play on Monday, which was essential in helping the Diamondbacks down the Dodgers and improve to 5-6 at home.
REPLAY: Fielding their position has been a hit-and-miss effort this season by Diamondbacks starting pitchers, although they're starting to get the basics down a lot better in recent games. Claudio Vargas was proof of that, throwing home Monday on a play that would end up going for a huge double play and keeping the visiting Dodgers out of a potentially big inning.
Another key has been the continuing improvement at the plate from right fielder Shawn Green, who went 2-for-4 and could be showing signs of bursting out. Green's contributions helped the Diamondbacks capture a 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

NOTES, QUOTES
--RHP Claudio Vargas has allowed only one earned run in his last two starts and hasn't walked more than one batter in four of his past five starts.
--Arizona is 5-6 at home after their 3-2 victory over the Dodgers at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks' 13-13 overall record is respectable, but if they're going to go anywhere, manager Bob Melvin knows it all rests on how they do at home.
"We've talked about it since last year," Melvin said. "Hopefully at some point in time it evens out. We'd like to think it will."
--RF Shawn Green on robbing the Dodgers' J.D. Drew of a potential two-run homer with a leaping grab in the third inning Monday: "I didn't think he got all of it. It sounded crisp, and I knew it would be close. I sensed the fence was there, timed my jump and pulled it back."
--CF Jerry Gil, who almost made the Diamondbacks' 25-man roster as a utility player playing primarily at shortstop, was sent from Triple-A Tucson to Double-A Tennessee in an effort to give him more playing time. Gil will be used in multiple positions with the Smokies and could easily be an injury-replacement recall for the Diamondbacks, although it appears SS Stephen Drew is being looked at the most closely as a potential position-player recall before anyone else. Gil was hitting just .128 in Tucson.
--RHP Mike Schultz, who had a 1.54 ERA in 11 2/3 innings, was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Tucson.
BY THE NUMBERS: 1,000 -- The number of walks Luis Gonzalez had drawn in his career (through April 28).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Jason Schmidt just has our number. He's one of the best pitchers in the league and he's just dominating against us." -- Arizona OF Luis Gonzalez, on the Giants right-hander.
