Trans. Blog: Putkonen Up, 9/1 Call Ups Coming

Putkonen is up - who else is coming?

Stay current with all the roster movement and personnel decisions with the TigsTown Transaction Blog. Luke Putkonen was called up on Thursday to help the tired bullpen, with September 1st call ups right around the corner. Who else will be added to the big league roster?

08/29/13

Recalled Luke Putkonen (RHP) from Toledo

Optioned Jose Alvarez (LHP) to Toledo

Activated Chad Wright (OF) from Lakeland's temporary inactive list

Analysis:

The Tigers made a swap to save the bullpen and brought up Luke Putkonen, fresh from Toledo, and sent down Alvarez. It's a short lived move however, as the Tigers will bring Alvarez back on September 1st, along with Phil Coke and Bryan Holaday, both of whom were also optioned down within the last ten days.

Beyond those few, speculation is rampant as to who else might come up with the roster expansion. Most names currently center around a few relievers like Evan Reed, infielders Hernan Perez and Danny Worth, and outfielder Nick Castellanos.

Optioned Jose Alvarez (LHP) to Toledo

Transferred Michael Morrison (RHP) to Lakeland from Erie

Activated Tyler Clark (RHP) from Erie's 7-day disabled list

Patrick Cooper (RHP) placed on Lakeland's temporary inactive list

Analysis: Some lineup juggling happened with Tyler Clark coming off the disabled list in Erie. Earlier in the week, there was plenty of shuffling among the catchers as Toledo lost both of its backstops (one to Detroit, the other to retirement), and needed to restock.

Activated Omar Infante (2B) from Detroit's 15-day disabled list

Optioned Hernan Perez (IF) to Toledo

Analysis:

After being sidelined for more than a month, stemming from the hard and questionable slide in Toronto, Infante returns to the lineup to help fill a void that was quickly becoming apparent since Jhonny Peralta hit the disabled list.

Perez remains a talented youngster with a bright future, however, he was hitting just .214 in Detroit with little patience and just one extra base hit in 56 at-bats. The cameo also provided some information to the Tigers on his current readiness, and potential to be ready for a full-time job next spring, with Infante's pending free agency.

For now however, the Tigers get a hard hitting member of the lineup back, as Infante was hitting over .300 with 26 extra base hits prior to hurting his ankle.

Placed Alex Avila (C ) on 7-day disabled list with concussion-like symptoms, retroactive to 8/10

Recalled Bryan Holaday (C ) from Toledo

Analysis:

Avila was checked out after a foul ball to the facemask in Cleveland sidelined him for a couple days, but he was cleared to play on Saturday and did. After the game however, he felt dizzy and nauseous, and while it's likely just lingering side effects, the Tigers don't want to take any risks with his health, and the alternate catching options on the roster (Victor Martinez and Don Kelly) are really just emergency options at this point in time.

Brayan Pena becomes the most days catcher for the next week or so, with Holaday filling in for possibly a game or two.

Avila has been struggling this season, but has still been reliable behind the plate. In addition, his offense had perked up over the last month, hitting .273 with an .831 OPS since the All-Star break.

Acquired Jose Iglesias (SS) from Boston Red Sox in exchange for Avisail Garcia (OF) and Brayan Villarreal (RHP)

Analysis:

As can often be the case with general manager Dave Dombrowski, on the same day he stated they were comfortable with their middle infield situation, they swung a big trade, landing the Cuban shortstop in Iglesias, who has been shining for the Red Sox thus far this season.

Plenty of players frequently have the term "Gold Glove-caliber" thrown around about them - but Iglesias is the real deal. While his bat is still a work in progress (despite what his .330 average would lead you to believe), his defense isn't just big league ready, but arguably dramatically shifts the landscape of the Tigers infield, assuming he slides in at shortstop. Longer term, he has the potential to hit for a solid average with some gap power.

This deal is obviously cover for the expected suspension of Jhonny Peralta, who has long been rumored to be linked to the Biogenesis scandal. Further, Peralta is a free agent at the end of the season, while Iglesias is just 23 and three years away from free agency.

While many assumed that Garcia would be off-limits, the opportunity to flip him for a player of similar potential and skill, at a position of need, clearly trumped the desire to hang onto Avisail. Villarreal is likely a throw-in piece as someone the Red Sox hope is a couple of tweaks away from regaining his effectiveness.

Never a dull moment for Dombrowski, who if there was any uncertainty, left no doubt remaining at this point that the Tigers are ready to win now, and not leaving any potentail suspensions up to chance.

Acquired Jose Veras (RHP) from Houston Astros in exchange for Danry Vasquez (OF) and a player to be named later, by 9/15

Analysis:

The Tigers pulled the trigger on the reliever everyone knew they needed on Monday morning, acquiring Veras in exchange for Vasquez and a PTBNL. Veras is an ideal fit for the Tigers short-term needs; an affordable contract for a pitcher who has been very effective closing this season in Houston, and has been a very good setup man in the past. Veras this season has an ERA under three, an FIP and xFIP in the mid-3's, and a K:BB ratio over three. Said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski, in a release announcing the deal: "We are pleased to add an experienced arm to our bullpen," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a release. "Jose can pitch in a variety of roles, provides depth in the bullpen and complements the roles of Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly."

The Tigers definitely paid a high price though, giving up Vasquez, plus another player that will be named by mid-September. Vasquez was signed out of Venezuela in 2010 with a $1.2 million signing bonus, and has consistently been among the top five prospects in the organization since being signed. He checked in at #5 on the TigsTown 2013 Midseason Top Ten. At age 19, he's hitting .281 in West Michigan with a .723 OPS, and has plus potential at the plate. He's likely at least two, and probably three, years away from being ready for a major league assignment.

Given his youth and the organizational strength at the position with players like Nick Castellanos, Avisail Garcia, Steven Moya, Daniel Fields and Tyler Collins, it's a position of wealth, arguably the only one right now, and a player far enough away from contributing that he was ultimately expendable.

There's no word yet on the accompanying PTBNL, potentially indicating that the Astros have a list of players to choose from who they'll be scouting in coming weeks to identify the right fit.

Placed Kyle Ryan (LHP) on Lakeland's 7-day disabled list with a blister on his throwing hand

Transferred Tim Remes (C ) to GCL Tigers from Lakeland

Transferred Zach Kirksey (OF) to GCL Tigers from West Michigan

Activated Austin Green (C ) from Connecticut's 7-day disabled list

Analysis:

Jair Jurrjens officially returns to the organization and joins the Mud Hens, where the Tigers will look for him to provide starting pitching depth at the upper levels of the organization, and see if he can regain the form that made him a Rookie of the Year candidate and All-Star.

Elsewhere, some fans had a bit of a scare of when lefty prospect Kyle Ryan hit the disabled list, just the latest in a long run of Lakeland pitchers to head to the disabled list this season. However, the injury is just a blister on one of his fingers on his throwing hand, and shouldn't sideline him for an extended period of time.

Placed Austin Green (C ) on Connecticut's 7-day disabled list

Placed Franklin Navarro (C ) on GCL Tigers' 7-day disabled list

Placed David Paulino (RHP) on GCL Tigers' 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury

Analysis:

The evolution of the Mud Hens' bullpen continues, as former Tigers' starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman joins the group, with the organization continuing to search for usable bullpen arms. Kenny Faulk also returns from the disabled list as Brayan Villarreal heads to it - both at this point are outside possibilities to help the Tigers this year. Bonderman did toss a scoreless inning of relief in his first appearance on Friday, striking out one.

Most concerning beyond Toledo is the news out of the GCL, with two prominent names hitting the disabled list; Paulino had impressed so far this summer, but an elbow injury looks like it will sideline him until 2014. Navarro's injury isn't thought to be as serious, but nonetheless another prominent name getting caught by the injury bug.
