Charles Brewer was solid for six innings as the BayBears ripped five extra-base hits in a 7-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons to claim the South Division Championship Series.
Brewer limited the Barons to just four hits over his six frames. He surrendered the lone Birmingham tally on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second to Alden Carrithers. By then, the BayBears' offense had already supported Brewer with three runs.
Ryan Wheeler put the BayBears on top by smashing a two-run double to the gap in left-center field in the bottom of the first, scoring Adam Eaton and A.J. Pollock. Wheeler was brought to the dish on a two-bagger by Taylor Harbin to put the BayBears up by three.
Dan Kaczrowski was given a spot start in place of the unavailable Daryle Ward, and Kaczrowski came through with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the second as Marc Krauss lumbered home all the way from first to make it 4-1.
Jake Elmore helped put the contest away in the bottom of the fifth as he punched a two-run triple and scored on another double by Wheeler. Yonata Ortega and Kevin Munson recorded the final nine outs. Munson struck out Brandon Short to finish off the division championship in the top of the ninth.
Game one of the Southern League Championship Series at "The Hank" is Wednesday night at 7:05 as the BayBears will battle the North Division Champion Tennessee Smokies.
