Xavier Nady hit .248 with 11 doubles, 4 home runs and 35 RBI in 82 games with the D-backs prior to suffering a broken left hand when he was hit by a pitch in the second inning of Friday's game. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.
Lyle Overbay, 34, hit .227 with 17 doubles, a triple, 8 home runs and 37 RBI in 103 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being unconditionally released on August 9th. Since he bats from the left side, he could form a straight platoon with Paul Goldschmidt. Overbay hasd an .822 OPS against right-handed pitchers in his career as compared with a .706 mark versus southpaws. At Double-A this season, Goldschmidt had a whopping 1.390 OPS against left-handers as opposed to a .934 tally against righties.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Overbay will become the 15th player to play two separate stints with the D-backs after spending the 2001-03 seasons with the club. He was selected by the D-backs in the 18th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft.
In order to make room for Overbay on the 40-man roster, Johan Jaime was designated for assignment. Jaime, 24, has not played since the 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2010. He was claimed off waivers from the Nationals on November 19, 2010.
