A 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning tipped toward the BayBears as Marc Krauss punched out his 12th home run of the season, leading the BayBears to a 4-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Krauss connected on a 1-0 fastball from Billy Bullock (1-1) and sent it high and deep over the fence in right field to snap a 3-3 deadlock. Ryan Cook (S, 11) was able to protect the advantage with a scoreless ninth despite walking Antoan Richardson with one out. Richardson stole second but stayed there as Mycal Jones fanned and Willie Cabrera fouled out to end the ballgame.
Patrick Corbin started for the BayBears (53-36, 15-4) and punched out eight Braves (33-56, 8-11) in 5.2 innings. He allowed just two runs on seven hits. Corbin was given a 3-0 cushion to work with as the BayBears picked up three in the second against starter Luis Avilan.
Krauss and Ed Easley started the second with consecutive singles and advanced a base when Corbin walked to load the bases. That set up Adam Eaton
to produce a two-run single, putting the BayBears on top. Corbin scored the third tally of the frame on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt.
Mississippi slowly squeaked their way back as they picked up their first run in the fourth. Cabrera doubled and scored on a base hit by Dan Nelson while Ernesto Mejia slugged a solo homer in the sixth to pull the Braves within one. Mississippi completed the comeback in the seventh against Bryan Woodall (2-2) as Richardson knocked a one-out single and scored from first on a double by Jones.
