Arizona Diamondbacks 2011 Draft Tracker
2011 MLB Draft

Posted Jun 7, 2011

Detailed information on all of the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2011 selections and brief analysis of the top picks.

Round
1
Arizona Diamondbacks
Trevor Bauer (Jayne Kamin-Oncea/US PRESSWIRE)
Player: Trevor Bauer
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185

Position: P
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 4/17/91
ANALYSIS: The Diamondbacks did well to take Trevor Bauer, a high-risk, high reward pitcher in a draft in which they had two picks among the top seven. Bauer draws comparisons to two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum. Both right-handers are somewhat undersized, have an unorthodox yet mechanically-sound delivery, possess good command of plus-stuff, and wield a four-pitch repertoire. One of the biggest knocks on Bauer is his inefficiency with his pitches; he has averaged nearly 130 pitches per start with UCLA, which is more wear than you'd like on a 20-year old's arm.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
1
Arizona Diamondbacks
Archie Bradley
Height: 6-3
Weight: 220

Position: SP
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 8/10/92
ANALYSIS: Archie Bradley has a prototypical pitcher stature at 6-foot-4 and over 210 pounds. The D-backs weren't kidding when they said signability would not be a factor for their seventh-round pick, as this high-schooler could conceivably choose college over the pros or even football over baseball. He is the total package, however, with tremendous arm strength and a plus curveball his most impressive tools.

Round
1s
Arizona Diamondbacks
Andrew Chafin (Brendan Maloney/US PRESSWIRE)
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210

Position: P
Bats: Right
Throws: Left
DOB: 6/17/90
ANALYSIS: Frankie Piliere of Scout.com ranked Chafin as the 45th-best player available in the draft, and the D-backs selected him 43rd overall.   Although he missed all of 2010 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Chafin bounced back with a stellar 2011 campaign.  He has a four-pitch arsenal, including a fastball, curve, and changeup all having the potential to be plus-pitches and a so-so slider.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
2
Arizona Diamondbacks
Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina Athletics)
Player: Anthony Meo
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185

Position: P
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 2/19/90
ANALYSIS: Frankie Piliere of Scout.com ranked Meo as the 42nd-best player available in the draft, yet he fell to Arizona at 63rd overall.  He will be re-joining former CCU teammate and All-American Cody Wheeler (fifth-round pick in 2010) in the Diamondbacks organization.  Meo went 32-7 with a 2.52 ERA in his Coastal Carolina career thanks to a fastball that sits around 93-94 mph and a nifty little curveball.  Due to his slender build and lack of a changeup, Meo might profile better as a reliever.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
3
Arizona Diamondbacks
Justin Bianco (Observer-Reporter)
Height: 5-11
Weight: 195

Position: OF
Bats: Left
Throws: Right
DOB: 8/24/92
ANALYSIS: Bianco is a well-rounded high school outfielder who was committed to attend the University of Pittsburgh prior to signing with Arizona. Although he was selected 93rd overall, Bianco did not rank among Scout.com's Top 100 Draft Prospects.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
4
Arizona Diamondbacks
Evan Marshall (Kansas State Athletics)
Height: 6-2
Weight: 208

Position: P
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 4/18/90
ANALYSIS: Evan Marshall only threw his fastball in the upper-80s as a Kansas State starting pitcher, but his velocity has reached the mid-90s after a move to the bullpen. His high-effort delivery profiles better there as well. Marshall's excellent slider should make him very difficult on right-handed batters even at advanced levels.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
5
Arizona Diamondbacks
2011 MLB Draft
Height: 5-11
Weight: 180

Position: C
Bats: Left
Throws:Right
DOB: 8/07/92
ANALYSIS: This 18-year-old Puerto Rican backstop has a strong arm from behind the dish and has a short swing from the left side of the plate. He helps boost an organization with little in the way of catcher prospects.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
6
Arizona Diamondbacks
Matt Price (Crystal LoGiudice/US PRESSWIRE)
Player: Matt Price
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215

Position: RP
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 9/8/89
ANALYSIS: Price was teammates with Blake Cooper, Arizona's 12th-round pick last season, when South Carolina won the College World Series. At that point, Cooper was the ace pitcher and Price the closer, but now it appears that the pair of Gamecocks will battle each other for a bullpen role with the Diamondbacks. Price has a fastball that ranges from the low-to-mid 90s and a good slider when it's on. Scouts like his makeup.

STATUS: Unsigned.

Round
7
Arizona Diamondbacks
2011 MLB Draft
Player: Ben Roberts
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200

Position: OF
Bats: Left
Throws: Right
DOB: 9/7/92
ANALYSIS: As a high school junior, Roberts hit .415 with 16 homeruns, 76 RBI, and 27 stolen bases. Through 21 games this season, he is hitting .338 with three homers, 24 RBI, and six steals. The three sport standout also excelled in football and basketball at Sentinel High. His baseball skills are extremely raw, but he is the most athletic of the Diamondbacks; 52 draft selections.

STATUS: Unsigned.

Round
8
Arizona Diamondbacks
2011 MLB Draft
Player: Jesse Darrah
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190

Position: P
Bats: Left
Throws: Right
DOB: 3/28/90
ANALYSIS: Darrah was the seventh pitcher selected by the Diamondbacks in their first 10 picks.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
9
Arizona Diamondbacks
2011 MLB Draft
Player: John Leonard
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160

Position: SS
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 6/25/92
ANALYSIS: Many mock drafts predicted that the Dimaondbacks would select a shortstop with the seventh overall pick. As it turns out, they did not select an infielder until the 274th pick. John Leonard is the younger brother of Joe Leonard, a third-round pick of the Atlanta Braves last season. The junior Leonard has signed a letter of intent with North Carolina State.

STATUS: Signed.

Round
10
Arizona Diamondbacks
Kyle Winkler (Brendan Maloney/US PRESSWIRE)
Player: Kyle Winkler
Height: 5-11
Weight: 195

Position: P
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
DOB: 6/8/90
ANALYSIS: Winkler has first-day stuff, ranked as the 43rd-best prospect in the draft by Scout.com, but he fell to the Diamondbacks in the 10th round due to an arm injury just prior to draft day. When healthy, he's a sinker/slider pitcher with plus velocity, a solid changeup, and improving command.

STATUS: Signed.
