3B Sean Burroughs was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, more than five
years since his last major league appearance for Tampa Bay in 2006, after 3B
Melvin Mora was placed on bereavement leave. Burroughs, San Diego's first-round pick in the 1998 draft, was hitting .386 with one home run and 15 RBI for Reno after signing a minor league deal with the D-backs last winter.
Burroughs grounded out as a pinch-hitter in his first at-bat back Thursday.
SS/LF Willie Bloomquist (right hamstring) was reinstated from the disabled list after missing 24 games and grounded out as a pinch-hitter
Wednesday. Bloomquist, the first major-leaguer to three, four, five, and six stolen bases this season, still leads the D-backs with seven steals. Manager Kirk Gibson said he plans to use Bloomquist in several roles, mainly as a right-handed option in left field and shortstop, where left-handed hitters Gerardo Parra and Stephen Drew start.
RHP Armando Galarraga asked the D-backs for one more start after his poor outing Monday, manager Kirk Gibson said Wednesday, but a decision already had been made to designate him for assignment. The D-backs have 10 days to trade, waive, or release Galarraga, who is on a one-year, $2.3 million contract. Galarraga was 3-4 with a 5.91 ERA,
had the highest walk rate on the team, and had allowed a major league-high 13 homers after his final start.
RHP Micah Owings is expected to be called up to make Galarraga's scheduled
start on Saturday. Owings is 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA, 27 strikeouts, and nine
walks with the Reno Aces.
