Wily Mo Pena homered once in the opener, then twice more in the nightcap Saturday, lifting the Reno Aces to a doubleheader sweep of the Salt Lake Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
In the opener, Reno trailed 4-0 after the first two innings, and still were
short by a run entering the seventh and final frame. With two on and the Aces down to their final out, pinch-hitter Sean Burroughs hit a two-run single that gave Reno its first lead of the game and a 5-4 victory.
Jason Urquidez (2-0) dealt 1.2 scoreless frames to earn the win in game one. Starter Zach Kroenke allowed four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings of work.
Tony Abreu's two hits in game one gave him three multi-hit games in four days
In the nightcap, Pena went 3-for-3, homered twice, and scored thrice.
Reno's only other hit was a Brandon Allen triple that plated Pena.
Tom Layne (3-1) was excellent in a spot start, earning the victory after holding Salt Lake to just one run over six innings. Former Bees reliever Rafael Rodriguez picked up his third save of the season
by tossing a perfect frame in a 4-1 Aces win.
Pena’s three homers give him a Pacific Coast League leading 12 on the season. He
recorded four hits on the day, and now leads the Aces with a .374 batting
average. His 32 RBI and 80 total bases rank second in the PCL while his
.808 slugging is first.
