The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed right-handed pitcher Juan Jaime off waivers from the Washington Nationals and have selected right-handed pitchers Josh Collmenter and Yonata Ortega to the club's 40-man roster. The roster now stands at 39 players, which gives Arizona the flexibility to add someone in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.
Most of the Diamondbacks' minor league talent is not yet eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Any player not on a team's 40-man roster who signed his first professional contract in 2007 or earlier who was at least 19 years old at the time he signed and any player who signed his first professional contract in 2006 or earlier who was at least 18 years or younger at the time he signed is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this December.
Although the Diamondbacks almost certainly will not lose anyone to the Rule 5 draft, RHP Wes Roemer, SS/2B Mark Hallberg, C Sean Coughlin, and OF Evan Frey headline the club's Rule 5-eligible prospects.
Dominican native Juan Jaime was signed by the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on December 7, 2004. The 23-year-old hurler missed the 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April. Over parts of five seasons in the Nationals farm system, he posted an 11-3 record and 2.43 ERA with 82 walks and 160 strikeouts in 126 innings (14 starts in 42 games).
Josh Collmenter, 24, combined to win 14 games last season, tied for third among all minor league pitchers, after splitting the season between Hi-A Visalia, Double-A Mobile, and Triple-A Reno. Over parts of four seasons in the D-backs organization, he owns a 40-27 record and 3.52 ERA with 174 walks and 465 strikeouts. Collmenter was selected by the D-backs in the 15th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft and went 4-0 with a 3.04 ERA in seven Arizona Fall League starts this autumn.
Yonata Ortega was signed by the D-backs as a non-drafted free agent on July 5, 2004. The 24-year-old Dominican posted a 4-4 record and 3.48 ERA (21 ER in 54.1 IP) with 18 walks and 56 strikeouts over 48 games between Low-A South Bend and Hi-A Visalia this season. He led the organization with 33 total saves and was named to the Midwest League Postseason All-Star team. Over parts of six seasons in the D-backs organization, he owns a 6-16 record and 4.59 ERA with 93 walks and 187 strikeouts in 202 innings.
The moves bring the D-backs' 40-man roster to 39 players:
Pitchers (21): Blaine Boyer, D.J. Carrasco, Sam Demel, Barry Enright, Juan Gutierrez, Daniel Hudson, Juan Jaime, Ian Kennedy, Zach Kroenke (L), Roque Mercedes, Kevin Mulvey, Jordan Norberto (L), Rafael Rodriguez, Carlos Rosa, Joe Saunders (L), Leyson Septimo (L), Daniel Stange, Brian Sweeney, and Esmerling Vasquez;
